The CSCA entrance test, and the dates that matter

Chinese universities are introducing a standard entrance test for international students, the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA). Many already ask for it, including for MBBS. We register you and help you prepare.

Common questions

Will my Chinese MBBS be recognised back home in Africa?

Yes, as long as you study at a university approved for English-taught MBBS and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Graduates then pass their home country's licensing exam, for example with the MDCN (Nigeria), MDC (Ghana), KMPDC (Kenya) or HPCSA (South Africa). We only recommend recognised universities.

Do I need to speak Chinese?

No. Medicine, Nursing and Engineering are all available fully in English. You'll take basic Mandarin classes, which help during clinical rotations and in daily life.

Is China a good place for African students?

Tens of thousands of African students study in China every year, and most campuses have active African student communities. Our pre-departure briefing covers culture, food, weather, banking and staying connected with home.

Can I get a full scholarship for a Bachelor's degree?

Full scholarships are most common for Master's and PhD. Bachelor's scholarships exist but are limited and competitive, especially for MBBS. Many universities offer partial tuition waivers or merit awards after your first year.

When is the intake and when should I apply?

The main intake is September 2027. Most university and provincial scholarship deadlines fall in May and June 2027, but universities say the earlier you apply, the higher your chance, and many recommend submitting by October 2026. Some universities also have a March intake.

What is the CSCA and do I need it?

The CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) is a new entrance test for international students applying to Chinese universities. Many universities, including Tongji for MBBS, already require it, and it is becoming compulsory for all Bachelor's applicants. Maths is required for everyone, and you add Chemistry or Physics depending on your program. You can take the science papers in English, and we help you register and prepare.

How much should I budget per year on self-support?

Plan for tuition (see the program fees above), campus accommodation, and living costs of about ¥1,600 to ¥2,000 per month in most cities. Expect an application fee of up to about ¥600, and some universities ask for a deposit (for example ¥5,000) before issuing the admission letter, which is then counted toward your tuition. We give you a full cost breakdown for every university we shortlist.
